LGWalker

 

Professor Leslie G Walker holds the Chair of Cancer Rehabilitation, and he is the Clinical Lead for the Division of Cancer, in the Postgraduate Medical Institute, University of Hull, UK.

He is also Director of the Institute of Rehabilitation (a joint venture between the University of Hull and the local NHS Trusts), and a member of the Faculty of the Hull York Medical School (HYMS).

Nine years ago, he founded a unique Oncology Health Service (funded by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust). Each year, more than 1,500 people with cancer access the Service for the first time, and each week some 250 people with cancer and their relatives attend the custom built, fully integrated Oncology Health Centre at Castle Hill Hospital.

Current research includes psychoneuroimmunological studies of breast, brain and colorectal cancers; psychosocial aspects of cancer screening; the evaluation of different models of providing psychosocial care, and the development and evaluation of psychological and complementary interventions for people with cancer. In the last five years, he has received funding from the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the HTA Programme, the NHS R&D Programme (Cancer) and Dimbleby Cancer Care.

Professor Walker chairs the Research Committee of Breast Cancer Care and he is a member of their Clinical Reference Group. He serves on a number of committees, including the Medical Research Council College of Experts, the Research Committee of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (Department of Health),and three Medical Research Council Multicentre Trial Steering Committees. He is also a member of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Clinical Experts Reference Group. Editorial Board membership includes the European Journal of Psychiatry, Contemporary Hypnosis, Psycho-Oncology and Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice.

He is a former Co-Chair of the Nominating Committee of the International Psychosocial Oncology Society and he has served two terms of Office as Chairman of the British Psychosocial Oncology Society. Until recently, he was Member of the Council of the British Society of Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis, the Population and Behavioural Sciences Committee of Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Research Institute Complementary Therapies Clinical Studies Development Group.

Professor Walker has given numerous Invited Lectures and Keynote Addresses throughout the world, and he has over 300 publications to his name.

He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Institute of Biology and the Royal Statistical Society.
